You may not think about them very often, but gutters play an important role in keeping your home safe and sound.

Your gutters should be cleaned in both the spring and the fall. If you can only manage to clean them once a year, try do it in the fall. This will clear out all of the leaves that have fallen into them.

Sometimes, cleaning isn’t enough. If you have any damage, you’ll need to replace your gutters.

How can you tell if it’s time to replace them?

Here are some signs:

Just a word of caution – you will probably need a ladder to do an actual inspection of your gutters. If you are unable to do this safely, call in a professional!

If you do climb up to check out your gutters, here’s what you’ll need to look for:

Do you see any visible cracks? Whether you have seamless gutters or sectional gutters, cracks are your enemy. They will lead to leaks, which will one day be water damage. No one wants their home to suffer from water damage.

Have your gutters been painted? If so, is the paint peeling? If the paint is peeling on your gutters, beware! This is another sign of a leak.

Another sign of a leak is to look for water marks below your gutters. If they are leaking, your home will start to absorb the water. When the sun comes out and starts drying the water, a water mark will be left behind.

Finally, look for any clogs inside the gutters. If they are clogging, they may not be installed properly.

As you can imagine, it is best to take care of any little problems before they become big problems. Taking care of water damage will be a much more complicated process than simply cleaning or replacing gutters.
